For the first time in twenty-six years the Vees are Doyle Cup Champions. The Vees downed the Brooks Bandits 6-2 in game five on Friday night.

The Vees now move on to the RBC Cup in Humboldt, Saskatchewan starting on May 5th.

Joey Benik led the way offensively for the Vees, recording a hat-trick and finishing with five points in the win. Benik opened the scoring just over five minutes into the first period; a slap-shot past the glove of Jan Obernesser at 5:05.

Steven Fogarty doubled the Vees lead on the power-play just before the ten minute mark. Fogarty pounced on a rebound in front of the Bandits goal after a Mike Reilly point-shot; Fogarty’s second goal of the series at 9:40.

The Vees went up by three before the period ended, Joey Benik recording his second goal of the period at 16:07. Bryce Gervais fed Benik at the far post for a tap-in, and his fourth of the series.

The Bandits Colton Semenok cut into the Vees lead with a power-play goal two minutes into the second period. Semenok found a rebound in the slot and put a hard-shot through the legs of Mike Garteig.

The Vees built up their lead with two more goals before the period came to an end. Joey Benik scored his hat-trick goal on the power-play at 9:46; a slap-shot past the blocker of Obernesser from the top of the left-circle. Steven Fogarty put the Vees up by four on another power-play goal. Mario Lucia rushed in over the blue-line before dropping the puck. Fogarty skated in between the circles and put a shot over the shoulder of Obernesser at 18:17; Obernesser was replaced by Michael Fredrick after the goal.

In the third period, Bryce Gervais scored a highlight-reel goal to cap of the scoring for the Vees. Gervais danced around a defender, before undressing the Bandits goaltender for his second goal in the series at 16:54.

Chris Muscoby ended the scoring with a late marker for the Bandits at 17:23; twenty-nine seconds after the Gervais tally.

    • The final is aired on TSN2 but their is no TV broadcast throughout the tournament. However, there is a PPV online package you can purchase through Hockey Canada.
