Then There Were Four

11softball_w1c4a1aa The Frozen Four is set to go in Pittsburgh in about ten days time. The NCAA Tournament paired itself down to the final four teams over the weekend and two of the four teams feature five Vees alumni.

Yesterday, backed by Joey Benik’s two-goal performance, St.Cloud State knocked off Miami-Ohio 4-1 to secure a spot in the Frozen Four; the first time for the school’s hockey program. Benik was named to the Midwest Regional All-Tournament team and was named MVP for his four-goal weekend which helped St.Cloud get to the Frozen Four. Don’t forget, the Huskies also have Joey Holka and Garrett Milan on their roster.

Highlights and story on Benik’s performance

College Hockey News story on Benik’s weekend.

The upstart Quinnipiac Bobcats, ranked number one in the nation at the end of the Regular Season, downed Union 5-1 in the East Regional Final Sunday to punch their ticket to Pittsburgh. Travis St. Denis and Mike Garteig are freshman at Quinnipiac this season.

Highlights and story on Quinnipiac’s East Win.

Joining St.Cloud State and Quinnipiac in the Frozen Four is Yale and UMass-Lowell. Yale is a bit of a Cinderella story, as they shocked North Dakota 2-1 on Saturday to reach the Frozen Four. UMass-Lowell isn’t as surprising as they did win the Hockey East Championship and blanked New Hampshire 2-0 to advance to Pittsburgh.

Congrats to Joey Benik, Joey Holka, Garrett, Travis and Mike!
