On Sunday night, two graduating Vees were selected in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in New Jersey. Wade Murphy and Jedd Soleway both had their names called in seventh and final round. Murphy was taken 185th overall by the Nashville Predators, who also took Seth Jones fourth overall. Soleway was nabbed eight picks later by the Phoenix Coyotes at 193rd overall; the desert dogs looking for some muscle down the middle.
First off I want to congratulate both Wade and Jedd on what is one of the best days of their young hockey careers. I spoke with Wade over the phone tonight, as he’s down in North Dakota preparing for his freshman season. He told me it was just starting to sink in, as he saw his name pop up on the computer screen and all over Twitter. He told me it hit home when his parents called from Victoria, an emotional moment they shared he said, which caught him off guard and got him a bit choked up. Murphy said it was extra sweet, after not getting drafted last June and putting in the work in the gym and on the ice to get to this moment.
Jedd found his game in Penticton, as a change of scenery from his hometown team did him some good. He found a spot centering Murphy and Louie Nanne and the three clicked immediately and put up some big numbers towards the end of the regular season. Jedd averaged over a point per-game with the Vees in the regular season and was a force in the post-season as well. A prototypical power-forward who uses his size to his benefit. He’s a north-south skater with a nose to the net and always found a way to be in the right spot at the right time. His strength in the face-off circle might go unnoticed by some, but he developed into one of, if not the top centerman on the Vees roster last season; used quite frequently in clutch situations.
Two good kids, who were deserving of having their names called today at the Draft. Wade is off to North Dakota as mentioned and Jedd will be suiting up for the Wisconsin Badgers this fall. I will have more in the next couple of days. Congrats guys!
