Two Vees Chosen at NHL Draft

Newest Ottawa Senator Miles Gendron takes a moment to pose for photo earlier Saturday, after the Senators took him in the third round, 70th overall at the NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia. Later in the morning, Gendron’s future teammate Jack Ramsey was scooped up by the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh round, 208th overall.

Friday morning, I wrote that we could see anywhere from 1-6 former & current Vees drafted today but we’ll happily settle for two. Now, for those that didn’t get drafted, it’s not the end but merely the beginning. They have next year’s draft in Florida or they can go the free agency route once they’re done their collegiate career.

For the second straight season, the Vees had two players taken in the NHL Entry Draft, as last June Wade Murphy and Jedd Soleway were seventh round selections of the Nashville Predators and Phoenix Coyotes respectively. In all, five players who played in the BCHL last season were taken and another two, including Gendron, who are coming in as fresh recruits; nine in total with BCHL connections. For a good recap on who from the BCHL got drafted, check Brian Wiebe’s blog here. As he wrote, “It was a red-letter day for the BCHL” and he’s right. Another strong representation of past and current players getting drafted on Saturday.
